about

Dance solo composed by Jackie
Hornpipe steps: Din Moore's/Fitzy's/Jackie's Hunt/Dorothy Hayden's/Brenda O'Callahan's
Hop jig steps: original

The Humours of Tullycrine is generally associated with West Clare musicians Junior Crehan, John Kelly, Bobby Casey, and even 19th-century piper Garrett Barry, and it’s a great, gritty tune for dancing. The steps are some of Jackie and Rebecca’s favorites that we've danced together over the years. Din Moore, the Kerry dancing master, was the first regularly employed dance teacher at the Cork Pipers Club, starting in 1898. His steps were widely learned and passed on, including this chestnut. We learned Fitzy's from the wonderful collection of Joe O'Donovan, Old Traditional Irish Step Dancing 1700-1930. The fourth step comes from the Dorothy Hayden Steppers, a famed New York dance troupe in the 1950s. Jackie learned the fifth step from Sligo dancer Brenda O'Callahan. The hop jig comes from the repertoire of Sligo fiddler Michael Gorman, who described this as a "slip jig" for the "Promenade step" when he recorded it. Rebecca and Jackie composed the steps to this melody.
