Although much of traditional Irish music is dance music, the two often exist in separate spheres, brought together only in specific settings or moments. This album views dance and music as not just complementary, but fundamentally the same: sound organized rhythmically in time and space. Though this collaboration remains deeply traditional - you will hear jigs, reels, and hornpipes, on the fiddle, accordion, and shoes - the arrangements highlight the sounds of dance as a percussive and harmonic element along with strings, reeds, and voice. You’ll hear dance in a song; you’ll hear fully-traditional polyrhythms; you’ll hear more lilting than you probably expected. But more than an intellectual exercise, it’s also an embodied experience. We hope you feel the energy we felt as four people in a room, playing and dancing together, with all the breaths, scuffs, and smiles that come with it.

A note on listening: creating an audio recording that has so much dance woven into it presented technical challenges, but we worked hard to capture the range of sounds and textures of percussive footwork. For optimal listening, we’d recommend a pair of good headphones or a speaker.
